January Date Night- Ice and Fights
This month was my turn to plan our monthly date. I had been scratching my head on what we could do... Trent likes sports and beer... where could we do both this time of year for cheap? Then a light bulb went off... a HOCKEY GAME!!! We had never been to a hockey game together so I figured this was perfect. My parents used to take me and my brother to KC Blades games all the time back in the day. Cotton candy and people fighting at the same place? To an 8 year old that's about as good as it gets :)
Settling into our seats with our hotdogs, nachos, and beer. Keeping it healthy.
The Missouri Mavericks is the hockey team in Independence, MO... just a short drive away and totally worth it. The arena that they play in is small- there's seriously not a bad seat in the place. I would know since I bought the cheapo tickets. They have had 7 sellout games in a row so if you want to go I strongly recommend buying tickets in advance.
We'd only seen a couple fights so we did our best fight face in hopes of encouraging some more fist throwing...
Then just a couple plays later there were two fights right in front of us. Our picture clearly worked.
Something new I learned about hockey- when a guy scores 3 goals in the same game it's called a hat trick and people will throw their hats onto the rink. After learning this tidbit my question rambling started. What do they do with the hats? Do the people get their hats back? Is there a place you can go to pick up your hat? Does the player ever keep a hat for good luck? This is usually about the time that Trent tries to drown out my voice... or wish he had ear plugs ;)
The stadium is so low key that walking down the stairs from our seats we almost ran right into some players. We were getting yelled at to clear the way, move from the aisle, get back, etc. How was I supposed to know where I was standing was for the players to leave? We got pushed behind the chain link security rope about the time this was finally dawning on me and I was trying to dig through my purse for my camera. I got it out just in time to get a picture of the hat trick guy- #37. If we go again I'm totally standing at the rope with the 12 year old boys for high fives and fist bumps. The players were all SO friendly! Overall we had a blast and can't wait to go back to another game with some friends!
